Coin experts have revealed the three $1 gold coins every Australian should know about, with some worth up to $100.
Australian coin experts have revealed three rare $1 gold coins worth looking out for in your change. Coins can be worth much more than their face value due to factors like the year they were minted, errors and the specific design on them.
The 2001 Centenary of Federation coin with a rotation error can be worth between $50 and $100. The rotation error means that if you flip the coin and the Queen’s head is not upright, “you found something special”.
Coinxchange founder Doug Mcrostie told Yahoo Finance that the error was caused by a problem with the die during manufacturing, which meant the die rotated.
“So they actually printed a whole bunch of different rotations, so it’s not a specific 90 degrees,” Mcrostie said.
“People frame it as a 1 o’clock rotation, or a 2 o’clock or 3 o’clock. So you can literally have it going all the way around.
“The most desirable ones are a direct 180 or a 90 degree. I’ve seen one collector have the full clock, so they had all 12 versions.”
The Royal Mint made 27.9 million of the 2001 Federation coins. While it is unclear how many of these have an error, Mcrostie estimated there could be “several thousand out there”.
The 2021 Mob of Roos standard issue coin is another rare one to look out for. These can be worth between $10 and $25, the group said.
These coins aren’t rare because of an error, but because they were “barely minted”.
It is the lowest mintage $1 coin in circulation, with the Royal Mint releasing just 106,000 of the coins, making them a rare find.
Lastly, the 2016 Changeover Coin can be worth between $20 and $50. The coin honours the 50th anniversary of Australia’s decimal currency changeover in 1966.
The coin features a commemorative obverse design of the Australian Florin, which was minted from 1910 to 1963. The reverse of the coin has the standard Mob of Roos design.
The $1 Changeover Coin was one of six commemorative coins made to celebrate the switch to decimal currency.
There were 560,000 of the $1 coins minted.
